My aunt and uncle hooked me up with this old postcard of Malden they found at a flea market in Florida. Back in the day you weren't allowed to write on the back of the card (address only), so folks squeezed their message onto the front. If you click on the picture here the image will open up bigger and you can read it for yourself.
Patrick spent the good part of an evening trying to figure out what part of Malden this card depicts. If you look at the lower-right corner of the picture, it looks like a sliver of rock, so the vantage point seems to be on top of a hill. Of course, it is a drawing/painting, so it could be a real mish-mash of views.
The message is from someone's mother, who is visiting a really annoying kid here in Malden. "I nipped the tip of Bimp' ear as you requested," she writes. "He is very bad." Ha!
Thanks Aunt and Uncle! Please send more if you find them :-)

I can tell you EXACTLY where this is: Waite's Mount, which you might also know as the wilds of Orient Street... where my parents live. It's stylized, definitely, but I know that view: I used to explore Waite's Mount a lot as a kid. I could probably walk you to this exact area, as could my mother, if you ever wanted to take a "now" picture.
Actually, here's a "now" picture: click! Note the incriminating sliver of rock.
The foliage is too thick there, so I suspect it was taken probably on a lower outcropping. It's either viewing the east (which would make it painted on my hill, possibly!) viewing Main Street or south, viewing Mountain Ave. I'm going to guess it looks south, then, towards Boston.
Malden Monday is sure shaping up to be a hoot!
Well, I haven't yet done a piece on Sparks...
Great news about IDing the view--I'm going to email this to Patrick right away!

Stacey, Here are some pictures from the Top of Waitt's and of the various paths I've been exploring. The whole Mount is loaded with blueberry brambles. I'm going picking come summer.
This is right by your house? I had no idea. It looks lovely, with those stairs and all. Except for that one picture of a hobo shelter. But other than that--great!
Stacey, Waite's Mount is pretty cool, actually. When I was growing up, it was pretty much where every Malden teenager went to get loaded or lose their virginity, but in actuality there's a lot of gorgeous park ground and wilderness up there. It's actually an utter shame Malden won't clean it up: it would make GREAT public park land. It's apparently a good destination for rock climbers, as well... Mark used to rave about it.
Well, you know I love rocks. I'll have to head over there--Traci, want to come? :-P
Stacey,
Come and have tea with me, and I'll take you up, and show you around. John and his Father are both getting very stinky about my going up on my own. Lots of hidden wonders.
Great idea. I might bring my camera and take somem pictures of my own. I'll email you--though not for a few days, as the snow is really coming down right now!
